The selection of grooved or smooth press rolls for pellet mills hinges on raw material properties: grooved rolls boost friction and prevent slipping, while smooth rolls resist material adhesion and are easy to clean.
Grooved rolls are the first choice for biomass pelleting, suitable for low-viscosity, fiber-rich and slip-prone raw materials like wood shavings and straw, which can improve pellet formation rate and adapt to medium-high output continuous production. Choose shallow and narrow grooves and clean the grooves regularly to avoid material accumulation.
Smooth rolls are preferred for feed and organic fertilizer pelleting, applicable to high-viscosity, high-moisture and caking-prone raw materials such as corn meal and livestock manure, featuring smooth discharge and easy cleaning. Select high-precision smooth surfaces and keep them flat.
For raw materials with 18%-20% moisture or mixed raw materials, choose shallow grooved rolls if fiber accounts for a higher proportion, and smooth rolls if viscosity is dominant; smooth rolls are recommended for small-batch test production. Match grooved rolls with straight-hole ring dies and smooth rolls with stepped-hole ring dies for better pelleting effects.
