With the advancement of the feed industry, pelleted feed has gained growing recognition. In Europe, nearly all feed types are pelleted except for layer feed. In southern China, pelleted feed production is expanding rapidly, accounting for over 80% of total output at most feed mills. The key benefits of using pelleted feed are outlined below:
1.Prevents feed segregation and environmental pollution; facilitates storage and transportation Powdered feed is prone to segregation during storage and shipment due to varying bulk densities of raw powder ingredients. Pelleting eliminates this segregation issue. In addition, pelleted feed generates minimal dust, resulting in far less airborne and moisture contamination during feeding, and prevents irritation to livestock and poultry respiratory tracts. After pelleting, feed volume is reduced by roughly one-third, cutting storage space requirements and transportation costs. Its excellent flowability also simplifies feed management.
2. Eliminates hazardous substances in feed and boosts food safety Consuming animal products contaminated with harmful bacteria such as Salmonella can trigger illnesses in humans. The pelleting process featuring high-temperature steam conditioning kills Salmonella present in animal feed, indirectly elevating food safety standards and safeguarding human health.
3.Improves palatability for livestock and poultry and raises feed intake High-temperature conditioning during pelleting gelatinizes starch and other nutrients in the feed, greatly enhancing palatability. Denser and more compact with higher nutrient concentration, pelleted feed stimulates animals to consume more feed.
4.Promotes digestion and absorption in animals and elevates feed conversion rate Combined effects of moisture, heat and pressure during pelleting trigger physical and chemical changes in feed. Gelatinized starch is more readily digested and absorbed by animals. Thermal processing also deactivates certain toxic substances and anti-nutritional factors, including trypsin inhibitors and hemagglutinins, thus improving the digestibility and utilization efficiency of feed.
