Why should the raw materials maintain proper moisture content?

Pellet formation relies on the combined action of cellulose and lignin. Cellulose is inherent in the raw material, while lignin can only be released under specific conditions. Appropriate moisture is therefore an essential condition for lignin release.
Research data shows that when the pellet mill compresses biomass pellets, the viscosity release of lignin is related to two factors:
1.Moisture content of the material
2.Temperature inside the pressing chamber during pelletizing
As shown in the figure above: lignin viscosity release is affected by temperature and moisture. The temperature inside the pressing chamber of a pellet mill during normal operation is approximately 80–110°C, which is a fixed operating condition. For this reason, the optimal moisture range for biomass feedstock during pelletizing is 13%–18%.
